The present study reports three cases of problems on farmed Arapaima gigas in the Peruvian and Brazilian Amazon (1st case: Jaundice disease in farmed Arapaima gigas (Schinz, 1822) in Pará, Brazil; 2nd case: Gas bubble disease in farmed Arapaima gigas from the Peruvian amazon and 3rd case: Mortalities caused by fights between sexually mature females of Arapaima gigas. All cases were reported during field expeditions to fish farms. The first case was reported in Para, Brazil and describes a jaundice disease caused by the consumption of contaminated food by micotoxins. The second case was reported in Iquitos, Peru and describes a “gas bubble” disease on young A. gigas caused by inadequate management and lack of acclimation when translated from a fish pond to glass aquaria and wooden boxes with shallow water. The third case is reported in Manaus, Brazil and describes a storage expe...

This article aims to provide a new concept of industrial processes, the so-called sustainable industrial processes that are used in industrial plants and competitive companies responsible for developing chemicals. These innovative processes should incorporate in its design stages that are efficient, producing less waste and scrap, not pollute the environment, using substances which are safe, and the products and by-products produced by them. These processes must be safe, both internally (for workers) and externally (for communities and ecosystems) and must contribute to sustainable development, ensuring the efficient use of natural resources and promoting the use of renewable resources. An example is the production cellulose pulp that is produced throughout Latin America (Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay), but a sustainable industrial process can be developed nationally.

Branchiurans are parasites from the buccal cavity, gills, skin, and fins of various fish species. The Neotropical region has one of the highest diversity of branchiurans. On Arapaima gigas, only four species of branchiurans have been reported. The present study improves the knowledge on host and geographical range of Dolops striata. Fish were collected from a fish farm in the State of Pará, Brazil. All A. gigas were parasitized by Dolops striata, which were collected from the fins and body surface. This is the first record of D. striata in A. gigas. The high prevalence detected warns the possibility of an increase in the number of D. striata infesting A. gigas, which may cause some problems for fish-farmers.

Atmospheric particles (PM10 and PM2.5) are responsible for serious problems in human health. Therefore, this study determined the spatial variation of the concentration of particulate matter in the department of Junin, as in the Brazilian Amazon for the period 2021. The data obtained were analyzed using the low-cost PA-II Purpleair sensor, to measurements of particulate matter (PM1, PM2.5 and PM10) at a temporal resolution of 1 min. Likewise, maximum average values of concentrations of particulate material less than 1um, 2.5um and 10um were obtained, which can reach values of 40, 49, 55 μg/m3, respectively. It is concluded that the high values slightly exceed the environmental quality standards of Peru.

Neglected diseases pose a significant public health problem, particularly for impoverished communities, with parasitic diseases being a prominent concern. Soil plays a crucial role in sustaining parasitic structures, facilitating the spread of infection over prolonged periods. This study aims to evaluate soil contamination in recreational areas of Maceió( Brazil) and analyze the occurrence of various pathogenic species. A total of 42 soil samples were collected from recreational areas, with 21 from the surface and 21 from depth. Each sample was appropriately labeled, packaged, and transported to the laboratory for analysis. The HPJ (Hoffman, Pons, and Jenner) and Ritchie techniques were utilized to process the samples, followed by microscopic readings stained with Lugol. Of the samples analyzed, 34 were positive (80.95%) with multiparasitism, whose helminths being the most prevalent amo...

Safety is one of the main problems of current tourism worldwide and directly threatening the image of any destination. The media contribute to the formation of this image and provide a perception of security or insecurity. Since the perception of insecurity in Brazil has been one of its main weaknesses, the question arises of how the media influence the formation of the image before a major tourist event. A content analysis on the treatment of tourism security in Brazil was carried out for 16 months prior to the Rio'16 Olympic Games in 1,034 Spanish digital media headlines. It is confirmed an excessively alarmist/sensationalist treatment in tourist topics that are related to the image and the Olympic Games. Although in other tourism areas the news is more flat and descriptive it is noticed that stereotypes of image arise on the occasion of major tourist events.

This article contributes to the current debate on the violation of human rights through the practice of green grabbing. The study reflects upon the situation of territorial insecurity and the struggle for territorial rights of the Akroá Gamela people, who live in the south of the State of Piauí, characterized by what is called here weak land governance. The indigenous territory studied does not have its homologation process finalized, which means that it does not officially exist, nor does it allow its boundaries to be added to most of the official databases of different governmental spheres. The region where the Akroá Gamela people are located is also situated within an area of advancing agricultural frontier known as Matopiba, located in the Cerrado area, the second largest biome in Brazil and South America. The main goal is to think on how green grabbing wickedly uses legal problem...

Most parasites represent a serious socioeconomic problem, because they affect pets, commercially raised, wild, and zoonotic animals. Weight loss, growth retardation, predisposition to other diseases and death are symptoms presented by the parasitized animals. The aim of this study was to evaluate the helminth fauna in bull-frog Lithobates catesbeianus raised for sale. We worked with five frog farms in the Vale do Paraíba, São Paulo, Brazil, and examined a total of 185 animals. The autopsies were performed, and all bodies that may have parasites were examined. Diagnostic parasitology tests were also performed. We found one species of nematode, Longibucca catesbeianae, with a prevalence of 1.7%, mean abundance of 14.16 and an average intensity of 850 (with a range of 729 to 1014). Given that most studies of parasitology in amphibians is conducted in free-living animals, more research on ...

Intestinal parasites are widely distributed and recognized as Public Health problems, mainly in the third world countries, where they are endemic. In this sense, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between enteroparasitosis, nutritional status and social indicators in children aged 6 to 14 years old who are enrolled in public schools. Therefore, part of the study was carried out with 523 pupils. For the copropatological examinations, spontaneous sedimentation and Kato-Katz methods were used; for the nutritional assessment, the anthropometric methods, evaluated according to the program of World Health Organization: Who Anthro Plus. Only 56.90% of the population studied has sanitation, and the majority of them (67.5%) with family income of one to two minimum wages. From the parasitological diagnoses, 26.77% had abnormal tests with higher percentage for the protozoan G...

Management decisions have an effect on cost behavior, and the duality of the CEO makes it easier for managers to make decisions based on personal interests. In Brazil, the Code of best corporate governance practices (Instituto Brasileiro de Governança Corporativa [IBGC], 2023) recommends that the chief executive officer (CEO) should not hold the position of chairman or member of the board of directors. In view of this, this research aimed to evaluate the effect of CEO duality on the asymmetric behavior of the operating costs (OC) of Brazilian publicly traded companies. To this end, descriptive, documentary and quantitative research was carried out on a balanced sample of 178 companies in the period 2012-2021, and the data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and hierarchical linear regression. This study adopted the perspective of Jensen and Meckling's agency theory (1976), in whic...
