This text reviews some of the characteristics and the means that have shaped gender identity, as part of the traditional and popular Mexican national identity. It is a matter of reflecting briefly and generally on the subject, with special emphasis, first of all, on the idea that it is a sociocultural construction, and therefore with possibilities for change. And secondly, on how the invented and mythologized image of the national soul is intimately intertwined and linked with the stereotypes and social roles assigned to each sex. This last matter being very peculiar to the Mexican context presented here.

John Ingham's work brings a new perspective to the various studies on religious syncretism and on so-called "folk" or "popular" Catholicism in Latin America. Through a modern semiotic-structuralist approach, Ingham demonstrates how the symbols, themes, and patterns of medieval Spanish Catholicism have penetrated and taken root in the public and private spheres of what has come to be called "traditional culture" in central Mexico. The author shows how in Tlayacapan, the town where he carried out his extensive field research, popular Catholicism is an integral part of the most practical and intimate aspects of the daily life of the inhabitants.

As well as political and social models, the Porfirian elites adopted the code of conduct and values in vogue in Europe. According to this scheme, the actions of the individual should originate from rational dictates, instead of obeying needs, instincts and emotions. Thus, for a human being to be considered a "civilized" person, he had to be moderate in his habits (including actions such as speaking, dressing or eating), control the expression of his feelings and, above all, regulate his behavior. impulses and act calmly.

This paper begins by describing the situation and problems that afflicted the Mexican prison system during the 1960s. According to the author, the critical state of Mexican prisons led to the establishment of a new system for the treatment of inmates. Thus, a penitentiary system was implemented that focused mainly on the resocialization of the inmate, as well as the promotion of his or her social reintegration. To this end, it sought to reverse the situation by reforming the prison regime, restructuring the penitentiary center, offering medical care, especially psychiatric and psychological care, establishing different work areas, and emphasizing the education of inmates. Furthermore, the benefits not only covered the inmates, but also the prison staff, who had access to the teaching and research institute of the penitentiary center. As the author points out, these modifications were rec...
