The proposals differ by the main fears of the intellectuals: anarchy and tyranny. These are the two scenarios that monarchists and republicans will see with concern, although they will be inclined to give more importance to one of them. The article aims to put these concerns in the use of republican language, emphasizing the nuances that were used and returning to the thoughts of authors such as Cicero and Machiavelli. El objetivo del presente escrito es adentrarse en la primera discusión pública que se dio en la recién emancipada nación peruana1. La discusión en torno a cuál sería la mejor forma de gobierno conjugó argumentos en los que sus interlocutores mostraban partir de interpretaciones similares de la realidad política. Sin embargo, esto no los llevó a realizar la misma apuesta. La distancia entre las propuestas se entiende en vista de los principales temores que se prefirió atender: anarquía o tiranía. Estos serán los dos escenarios que monárquicos y republicanos verán con preocupación, aunque se inclinarán por dar mayor trascendencia a alguno de los dos. El artículo se propone enmarcar estas preocupaciones y los argumentos propuestos en el lenguaje de la tradición republicana, resaltando los matices que usaron los interlocutores de esta primera discusión en la política nacional y acudiendo al pensamiento de republicanos como Cicerón y Maquiavelo.
