|Summary:||ABSTRACT In the present research work, the wind characteristics of the coastal zone of the province of Paita, Piura, Peru, have been studied in order to evaluate the mechanical power. Speed and wind direction data were collected during two years (2015 and 2016) by means of anemometers installed at heights 24, 49 and 58 m. The data of the wind magnitude were collected every 10 minutes and with this data, frequency distribution tables, histograms were constructed, applying the Weibull probability distribution model. With the scale and shape factors of Weibull the mechanical power density was calculated. With respect to the direction of the wind the so-called "wind roses" were built. The general behavior of the wind speed and direction was similar for the years 2015 and 2016, observing that the lowest values of the speed occurred in the month of March and the highest values in the month of May. The direction of the wind was north west, with a predominance of north-north-west. The annual averages of the wind speed at heights of 24, 49 and 58 m for 2015 were: 7.9, 8.1 and 8.4 m / s in summer, 9.2, 9.5 and 10.2 m / s in autumn, 8.7, 9.1 and 9.3 m / s in winter, 8.7, 9.1 and 9.4 m / s in spring and 8.48, 8.84 and 9.11 m / s throughout the year. Similar values were obtained for the year 2016. These data indicate that the coastal area of the province of Paita shows great potential for the use of wind energy.|
