|Summary:||The paper examines the causes of poor academic performance in college students in the third year of law school and political science at the National University of Trujillo in 2013, the influence of personal characteristics, family background, high school and the initial stage of college life on their academic performance. To avoid consistency problems in the estimates, censored model is used to describe the behavior of students. The main results indicate that the lack of time to work and study at the same time is elements that affect performance in college. However, the influence is not homogeneous. Underperforming students are most affected by factors such as the low value in the study habits that generates an imbalance of time and poor organization for academic activities of students in the third year of law school and political science.|
