Cómo se ha comportado el monzón y cómo cambiará en el futuro son preguntas que abordé en esta disertación. Primero, se evalúa una red de cronologías de anillos de árboles para describir la variabilidad de NAM durante cuatro siglos. La red muestra una variabilidad de baja frecuencia en precipitación de verano. Esta variabilidad de baja frecuencia parece ser parte de sequías multianuales. Segundo, consideramos la variabilidad climática identificada con los anillos de los árboles para evaluar la incertidumbre en las proyecciones del cambio climático a partir de los modelos utilizados en el proyecto NARCCAP. La proyección climática se evalúa en su capacidad para representar trenes de ondas de Rossby cuasi-estacionarios de verano vinculados a El Niño. Finalmente, se explora la señal de sequía de baja frecuencia de un modelo climático. El análisis estadístico sugiere que la señal de sequía de baja frecuencia en el NAM está impulsada por cambios en la circulación atmosférica de escalas globales a continentales. Por lo tanto, la variabilidad climática de baja frecuencia es probablemente la responsable de las sequías multi anuales en los últimos cuatro siglos.In the United States, the North American Monsoon (NAM) is the main driver of weather severe. How the monsoon has behaved and how it will change in the future are questions I addressed in this dissertation. First, a network of tree-ring chronologies is evaluated to describe NAM variability over four centuries. The network shows a low frequency variability in summer precipitation. This low frequency variability appears to be part of multi-year droughts. Second, we consider climate variability identified with tree rings to assess the uncertainty in climate change projections from the models used in the NARCCAP project. The climate projection is evaluated on its ability to represent quasi-stationary summer Rossby wave trains linked to El Niño. Finally, the low-frequency drought signal from a climate model is explored. Statistical analysis suggests that the low-frequency drought signal in the NAM is driven by changes in atmospheric circulation from global to continental scales.
